Care & Cleaning

CARING
For the routine maintenance of the rugs, we suggest to vacuum them weekly, in order to remove dust and other residues. It might happen that, during a first period, some fibres come off from the carpet. This is absolutely normal. The wool and/or silk carpets always have some excess fibres, which disappear gradually with the normal use. In order to get a uniform exposure to light and to trampling, we suggest to rotate the carpet regularly.
We also recommend removing stains immediately. Proceed with caution in order not to damage the fibres. To remove stains, soak up first of all with blotting paper. Then immerse a cloth or a sponge in lukewarm water. Dampen the stain without rubbing and soak up, repeating these actions until you have completely removed the stain.
For difficult stains, we recommend promptly contacting specialist dry-cleaner’s shops. For the washing, we recommend contacting specialist dry-cleaner’s shops.
LOOSE THREADS
If a thread becomes loose in your rug, do not pull it, but carefully cut it with sharp scissors. This will not damage the rug.
FLUFF & VACUUMING
New rugs can shed a bit of fluff, which is created from excess fibres that were not properly incorporated into the yarn during spinning. This is normal, and is not a sign that your rug is falling apart! It is best to vacuum a rug often at first until the fluffing ceases. If you are able to control the power of your vacuum cleaner, ensure that it is not at the most powerful setting. Do not use a cleaner head with teeth as this will damage the rug.
A NOTE ON TONE (ABRASH)
Yarn prepared by hand is not completely uniform in colour or thickness. When this yarn is dyed it does not take the colour evenly, and these inconsistencies produce a subtle stripe effect in the finished rug, called ‘abrash’. This is a desirable feature of handmade rugs, imparting them with life and character. Rugs made without abrash appear flat and look machine made.
FADING
After prolonged exposure, sunlight will eventually affect the colour of any material. While we use the very best dyes that are resilient to fading, there are no dyes that can completely avoid this natural process. As such, our experts advise rotating rugs from time to time to create an even fade.
USE A UNDERLAY
If you want to minimise the wear and tear in your rug an underlay is an efficient and convenient way to do so. It will not only prolong the life of your rug, but also provide extra security and comfort as the carpet will remain firmly fixed in place. An other positive aspect of using an underlay is it’s ability to absorb sound and in most cases even provide extra walking comfort.
